Dr. John Dietrick Specializes in Gastric Bypass Surgery – Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Brandon, Lakeland and Surrounding Areas

gastric bypass2During a gastric bypass, the stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a larger distal remnant.  Then the intestine is divided and one limb of intestine is connected to the small gastric pouch.  With the gastric bypass operation, most of the stomach and the first portion of the intestine are “bypassed”.

The gastric bypass surgery is a restrictive operation because only a small portion of food fits into the  newly created pouch.  It is also a malabsorptive procedure since some of the nutrients eaten are not able to be absorbed by the remaining intestine.

The gastric bypass surgery can be performed with a laparoscope most of the time.  The laparoscopic approach allows long instruments to be placed through several tiny incisions on the abdomen.  With this technique, there is less post-operative pain, a shortened hospital stay and quicker recovery.
