Dr. Dietrick Performs Weight Loss Surgery for Patients in and around Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Brandon and Lakeland

Weight Loss Surgery TampaIf you are morbidly overweight and struggle with losing pounds by way of dieting and exercise, weight loss surgery may be an option for you. Weight loss surgery, also referred to as Bariatric surgery, is typically for women at least 80 pounds overweight and men who are overweight by at least 100 pounds. Weight loss surgery may also be an option for someone who is less overweight but with sleep apnea, heart disease or diabetes.

Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

The criteria for weight loss surgery are:

  1. BMI of 40 or a BMI of 35 with “co-morbidities” (BMI of 30 for non-surgical option)
  2. Unable to lose weight [and keep it off] with medically supervised diets
  3. Able to tolerate an anesthetic
  4. Pass a psychological assessment
  5. Complete a pre-operative education program

Weight loss surgery is typically recommended for someone who has a BMI or body mass index of 40 or a BMI of 35 with diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, severe joint pain or another medical problem due to excess weight. During your consultation with the surgeon, Dr. Dietrick will discuss the different weight loss surgery options which include:

  • Gastric Sleeve: This type of weight loss surgery reduces the stomach size and “reconfigures” it into a narrow tube. Following surgery, there is a marked reduction in the amount of food that can be consumed at one time. You are satisfied after eating less food. A gastric sleeve procedure is less invasive than the gastric bypass and there is much less risk of malnutrition. This operation is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery in the United States
  • Gastric Bypass: This type of weight loss surgery is beneficial for weight loss because it reduces the amount of food you can consume and reduces the amount of nutrients and calories that are absorbed from the food eaten. This is an excellent option for individuals with diabetes or severe heartburn. There has been a high success rate with gastric bypass surgery and the average weight loss is about 60-70% of the excess body weight.
  • VBloc® Therapy: This type of weight loss surgery uses a pacemaker-like device implanted through a minimally invasive procedure that blocks hunger signals travelling through the vagus nerve, empowering you to eat less.
  • LAP-BAND: This device is an inflatable, plastic ring that is placed around the top portion of the stomach slowing the passage of food into the stomach. The LAP-BAND can be adjusted to each patient’s need.
  • Revisional Surgery: Some patients may be a candidate for a different form of weight loss surgery if they were unsuccessful with the first bariatric surgery they have chosen. There are several options available depending on the individual.
  • ORBERA™ Weight Management System: This is a non-surgical weight loss option that places an intragastric balloon in the stomach using an endoscope. The balloon fills a large space inside the stomach, making you feel full all the time and encourages portion management. As Medical Director of the Florida Hospital Tampa Surgical Weight Loss Institute, Dr. Dietrick can consult with patients who may be considering ORBERA™ as a weight loss option.

As with any operation, there is risk and a few potential complications. However, weight loss surgery is intended to help reduce your risk of serious health problems and death that may be associated with obesity. Weight loss after bariatric surgery also helps improve your self esteem.

If you have questions about weight loss surgery or would like to  make an appointment to discuss your options, Dr. Dietrick will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding weight loss.
